
Si è tenuto nella cattedrale di Washington D.C. il funerale di stato di George Herbert Walker Bush, il quarantunesimo presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, morto il 30 novembre a 94 anni. Bush – che fu presidente dal 1989 al 1993 – è stato ricordato durante l’elogio funebre da suo figlio George W. Bush, anche lui ex presidente degli Stati Uniti, come “un grande presidente, un diplomatico dal talento impareggiabile, un comandante in capo che ha ottenuto risultati formidabili e un gentiluomo che ricoprì l’incarico con dignità e onore”. George W. Bush si è commosso più volte durante il discorso.
In prima fila tra il pubblico c’erano il presidente Trump e gli altri ex presidenti viventi – Barack Obama, Bill Clinton e Jimmy Carter – insieme ai giudici della Corte Suprema, parlamentari ed ex parlamentari e leader stranieri come la cancelliera tedesca Angela Merkel. “Visti i suoi noti rancori con la famiglia Bush”, ha scritto il New York Times, “Trump non ha preso la parola durante la cerimonia. Non c’è stata la sensazione di rigetto verso Trump osservata durante i funerali di John McCain, ai quali Trump non era nemmeno stato invitato, ma i contrasti tra l’attuale presidente e chi lo ha preceduto non potevano non essere colti”.PUBBLICITÀ
L’arrivo del presidente Donald Trump e di sua moglie Melania è stato particolarmente osservato anche per questo, oltre che per la sua prossimità fisica con gli altri ex presidenti e le loro mogli: con Barack Obama e con Hillary Clinton, per esempio, che ha più volte accusato, criticato e insultato. I saluti sono stati piuttosto freddi, soprattutto quello con Michelle Obama; Hillary e Bill Clinton si sono limitati a fargli un cenno con il capo.
Altri hanno notato che l’ex presidente George W. Bush, figlio di George H. W. Bush, salutando gli altri ex presidenti e le loro mogli ha dato qualcosa a Michelle Obama. Era con ogni probabilità una caramella alla menta, cosa che tra i due è diventato un piccolo rito. Anche durante il funerale di John McCain, infatti, Bush aveva passato a Michelle Obama una caramella. Michelle Obama aveva raccontato all’epoca che per questioni di protocollo lei finisce sempre seduta accanto a George W. Bush nelle cerimonie ufficiali – i presidenti si siedono in ordine di insediamento, con accanto le mogli – e per questo nel tempo hanno stretto un rapporto affettuoso e cordiale.
Un altro video di queste cerimonie che è circolato molto, girato martedì, mostra la visita alla camera ardente di Bob Dole, storico esponente del Partito Repubblicano, rispettato senatore per moltissimi anni, candidato alla presidenza nel 1996 e sfidante proprio di Bush alle primarie Repubblicane del 1988. Dole, che ha 95 anni, è stato aiutato ad alzarsi dalla sua sedia a rotelle per rendere omaggio a Bush.
